increase in sustainable coffee purchases
BONN, GERMANY (8 December 2025). The Global Coffee Platform (GCP) has published the Sustainable Coffee Purchases Report 2024, revealing growth in sustainable coffee purchases by more GCP Members. The sixth edition highlights improved transparency and progress in the uptake of sustainable coffees that meet at least foundational levels of the Coffee Sustainability Reference Code (Coffee SR Code).
Eleven leading roasters and retailers – JDE Peet’s, Julius Meinl, Keurig Dr Pepper, Melitta Group, Mother Parkers, Nestlé, Supracafé, Taylors of Harrogate, TESCO, UCC, and Westrock Coffee Company – reported their 2024 sustainable coffee purchases through GCP’s Collective Reporting initiative. The report uses common, comparable metrics to show how these companies have worked with their supply chain partners and coffee producers to purchase coffees from GCP-recognized Sustainability Schemes that operate either with a 3rd Party Assurance System or with a 2nd Party Assurance System.

“The growing number of GCP Members aligned around jointly-developed definitions of coffee sustainability shows what collective action can achieve,” said Annette Pensel, GCP Executive Director.
“We applaud the transparency demonstrated by the participating companies and encourage all roasters and retailers to join this initiative. This helps to create a level playing field for baseline sustainability that enables compliance at scale, and, importantly, encourages continuous improvement for farmers and the entire supply chain,” said Annette Pensel, Executive Director of GCP.
These advances are grounded in adoption of sector-wide sustainability tools that support concrete steps towards sustainable sourcing: the Coffee SR Code and GCP’s Equivalence Mechanism. This mechanism recognizes Sustainability Schemes as equivalent to the Coffee SR Code according to the differences in their assurance systems. This alignment and collective action enables a shared understanding and basic level of sustainability and responds to compliance needs across the sector while encouraging continuous improvement over time.
The following sustainability schemes were eligible for 2024 Collective Reporting:

*Mercon’s LIFT was still eligible for reporting on 2024 but since then is no longer active.
Additional schemes have already been recognized and are eligible for future collective reporting rounds. Click here for the most recent list.
The 2024 report underscores the importance of transparent, annual reporting on sustainable coffee purchases. Transparency builds trust, and the resulting report provides comparable data and insights on the demand for sustainable coffees.
“We are pleased to see the growing number of companies embracing transparency,” said Pensel. “Coffee consumers, corporate shareholders and investors expect increasing access to transparent information on our industry’s sustainability strategies, progress and impact.”
GCP’s 2026 review of the Coffee SR Code and Equivalence Mechanism will be another key chance for members and partners to shape the future of shared sustainability tools and ensure they remain as sector expectations evolve.
“As a coffee community, we must keep evaluating the positive impact our investments and actions have on farmers and the environment. Now is the time to enhance collaboration to further align our measurement and investment efforts,” said Pensel, adding that a better understanding of progress, risks and opportunities can help to unlock collective solutions to improve farmer livelihoods, environmental health and supply chain resilience.
