GCP Brazil publishes results of collective alignment on Regenerative Coffee Farming

GCP Brazil is championing regenerative coffee farming as a vital approach to safeguard the future of coffee production against the impacts of climate change. This practice supports the preservation and enhancement of soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, alongside the efficient use of water – all contributing to improved farmer resilience and prosperity.

However, the lack of a unified definition of regenerative coffee farming, referred to by GCP as RegenCoffee, has created uncertainty about which practices and processes to adopt. Doubts like these can hinder the transition to regenerative production systems, especially among smallholder farmers.

To address this challenge, GCP Brazil has led a collective effort to map and harmonize concepts and practices to regenerative farming. This initiative engaged over 70 technicians and specialists from more than 30 organizations, including technical assistance and rural extension agencies, c associations, cooperatives, exporters, roasters, certifications and civil society. Over a 10-month period, the team convened four meetings, including a field day, a webinar, and in-person workshops with renowned specialists and researchers that actively contributed to the development of a comprehensive resource.

The result of this work is the document 7 Elements for the Implementation of Regenerative Coffee Farming, which is available in English.

This material will be integrated into the 2030 Collective Action for Producer Prosperity initiative in Brazil. The primary objective of this initiative is to increase climate resilience and ensure the prosperity of 95,000 coffee growers by 2030.

Work on this agenda is ongoing. The Brazil Working Group, along with other GCP Members, is now focused on defining indicators to monitor the adoption and progress of regenerative practices in the field. This process is expected to continue through 2025.
