In April and early May 2020, as part of the GCP’s Call to Action to ensure sustainable livelihoods in coffee producing communities around the world, a new webinar series was launched to show how collective action can have impact at scale across the coffee value chain.
“Big battles are fought and won collectively,” said GCP’s Mary Petitt, GCP Ambassador North America about the thinking behind the webinar series. “GCP’s extensive network of global Members and local Country Platforms are clearly at the forefront accomplishing collective action initiatives that deliver significant results and create well-being for coffee farmers and their families around the world. This series will introduce more people to the great potential we see.”
The series, called Field Days, aimed to take participants into the virtual field where GCP members, donors and partners have committed to working together for a common cause with the goal of improving coffee sustainability. The series focused on the work of the Collective Action Initiatives and showed how cooperation between companies and organizations and the leveraging of their resources can tackle serious issues for coffee at origin.
Field Days shows members exactly how they can be a part of these results, provides expert local input on the issues presented in different coffee regions, and shows how initiative participants are benefiting from the rich knowledge being shared.
The first two webinars presented participants with the opportunity to get actively engaged in two new Collective Action Initiatives in Vietnam and Brazil – both of which are still currently welcoming new participants.
GCP and the Brazil Country Platform and partners InPACTO and Cecafé, discuss the forthcoming Collective Action Initiative focused on improving the social well-being of workers in Brazil’s coffee sector.
Facing issues such as forced labor, legislation violations, and poor working conditions, this webinar showed participants how pre-competitive joint action between companies and organizations can make a significant difference to the social well-being of workers and the positive effects this could have on coffee production in Brazil.
The webinar introduced participants to GCP Collective Action Initiatives and invited participants to get involved in the forthcoming initiative in Brazil and explain how GCP is ready and able to drive impact at source.

GCP and the Vietnam Country Platform took part in a webinar about the forthcoming Collective Action Initiative focused on improving the use of agro-inputs in Vietnam.
Participants were introduced to pre-competitive joint action that will not only contribute to a critical issue for Vietnam’s coffee production, but also provide the opportunity for members to reduce their risk and leverage resources with other co-funders.
The webinar presented to participants how a Collective Action Initiative will help solve a pressing issue facing the country’s coffee sector. Topics discussed include the response to glyphosate in the country, how joint action can ensure continuously good quality coffee, and how more organisations can get involved now.
