GCP Collective Action in East Africa mid-program update

GCP has published new progress updates from the Collective Action in East Africa program in Kenya and Uganda. The mid-program updates (2025-2026) highlight achievements, lessons learned, and stories from the field, demonstrating how collective action is already delivering tangible results for farmers, youth, and coffee-growing communities across both countries.

Launched in 2025, this program is part of a €2 million pre-competitive investment by leading coffee companies and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ). As part of GCP’s Collective Action for Farmer Prosperity, it expands on the work of the Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains Initiative (SASI). SASI, funded by BMZ and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, focuses on improving social, environmental, and economic conditions throughout agricultural supply chains.

GCP-affiliated Country Platforms in Kenya (Kenya Coffee Platform) and Uganda (Uganda Coffee Platform, hosted by Café Africa Uganda) coordinate the implementation and help ensure that lessons learned inform national coffee sector discussions and future action.

In Kenya, the program focuses on strengthening last-mile extension services by training new Master Trainers and linking them to the country’s cooperative structure to cascade knowledge on sustainable agricultural practices. Mid-program results show progress in building local service capacity and creating stronger pathways for farmers to access technical support.

In Uganda, the program is capacitating entrepreneurial youths to establish Youth Business Units that provide coffee rehabilitation, renovation, and agroforestry services to farmers. The update highlights growing youth-led businesses, expanded access to technical support, and stronger connections to coffee supply chains, creating benefits for both rural livelihoods and the wider coffee sector.
